The Purple Tape Part 2 Review

By admin

music review obfcl2Now from the gate, I AM A HIP-HOP HEAD, period and have been for over 25 yrs. I was a DJ for 3yrs, a wall writer & to a lesser extent, a break dancer. I am from Philly but made weekly trips to NYC, mostly Brooklyn & the Boogie Down Bronx. I remember when hip-hop began, the mainstream media would diss it on the regular, it’s a fad, it’s not “real” music, it’s just an urban thing, it won’t last, etc…Well look where we are now,hip-hop is the dominant form of music on the charts, even with the slow death of cd’s due to PTP’s, it still sells.

Almost 4 years ago Nas came out with a song I thought was prolific called “Hip-Hop is dead”.  In my opinion no truer word has been spoken. I thought “real” non- commercial hip hop was dead, until 50 cent, Lupe Fiasco & Little Brother gave me hope. Jay-Z has come out of retiremnt twice to keep it poppin’ & now the group Chuck D called ” the greatest hip-hop group ever” has returned in spades. Those witty unpredictable brothers known collectively as THE WU TANG CLAN are back by way of Raekwon the chefs follow up to his certified classic, Only Built for Cuban Linx with  of course OBFCL part 2. This joint bangs from start to finish, I haven’t listened to a hip-hop cd daily since like ’95,but this jawn…..DAILY. The production is tiiiiight. The RZA went back in time to when we first heard of the WU, solid eeerie but hot beats with kung-fu movie samples sprinkled around.

Even though it’s a Rae solo cd, all of the WU-Tang clan show up and boy do they spit. I told my boy this could single handedly save Hip-Hop, a grand statement but true, I mean “real” hip hop, grimy, low production underground beats Not trying to top the charts, just entertain the core audience & it’s all here. A true deal because you get 21 tracks of which 20 are off the hook, I actually bought this Cd not having purchased one for yrs.It picks up where the original OBFCL left off, same “scenarios”,same sick ass rhymes & the illest beats. Are Reakwon and Ghostface the sickest team in hip hop? In my humble opinion YES, maybe better than Red and Meth. To sum this up…GO GET THIS NOW, don’t sleep on some of the best, REAL hip-hop to come out in yrs. I know the Blueprint 3 is all you may be hearing about, this is WAAAAAAAY better no question.

I’m still mad at Jay for not being original enough to come out w/his own title for his albums. KRS should get residuals for real. Get Raekwons: Only Built For Cuban Linx pt 2, you won’t be dissappointed at all. A 10 out 0f 10 (remember this rating because u may not see too many of these in this catagory) Sir M
